How to create Metal Texture in Photoshop

This post is the English translation of one of my first Italian posts on this blog.
The aim is to show how to create a Metal effect texture in Photoshop and how to obtain variation from it.

1) Open a new file and create the document as a 300 dpi square 1000 x 1000 px.

2) Fill in the background with a dark gray

3) Add some noise selecting Filter>Noise>Add Noise and setting a medium noise Amount, Distribution Gaussian, Monochrome.

4) Let's make the surface irregular like the metal. Go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and set the values as you can see in the picture. If you want to stress the effect you can apply the filter again and again. I've applied it three times.

5) Now add a little light to the metal going to Filter>Render>Lighting Effect and apply the filter with the following settings:

6) Repeat step n. 5 changing some parameters, size and focus point of the light. I've used the parameters as shown in the picture but the final effect is purely subjective.

The Metal Texture is ready!

With the same procedure you can create several options for the same texture just changing something into the light effect parameters or shifting motion blur inclination. Try out!
