Aspen Light in Black and White

You might recognize this photograph. It is not entirely new to my portfolio. What is new is the presentation. I was recently requested to change a couple of my most popular color photographs to black and white. And to make things even more interesting this person wanted squares. I love a challenge so I said I would play around and see what happened. The original photograph is here too so that you can compare. Tell me what you think.

Mountain Majesty in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado

The sky was a beautiful blue with white puffy clouds when we headed down the mountain. The view was snow capped mountain tops as far as you could see. The air, even though summer, had a raw bite that reminded you with each step that you were at the mercy of a landscape that had no mercy or pity for your human frailty. It is a feeling of smallness and at the same time a feeling of being connected to all the wonder about you.

A storm front approached and it was time to leave lest we be reminded again of our short comings. I looked up just in time to see the approaching clouds create an angle that matched the mountains perfectly creating a zig zag window in the vista. Do you see it? Then in an instant the clouds obscured the amazing view and we retreated to safety below. I hope you enjoyed this little diversion and my newest black and white photography.

Less Traveled Road

The sky was grumbling and growling as I made my way on the less traveled road. The wind was buffeting the truck and a gust brought the sweet scent of rain in through the window and moistened my face with its coolness. The pickup crested one hill and plunged down another before laboring up the next one. I was heading right for the churning clouds. It was time to stop and watch as the line of pines marched off into the maw of the storm.

Firehouse Architecture - Alpine Hose No. 2

Hello! It's great to be back home in Colorado. We accomplished what we needed to do in Ohio and made time for some family reunions too. The drive was long, roughly 1300 miles one way, but we made it in record time even though we had a mechanical failure in Iowa. Seems our truck does not like moisture so I'll be staying closer to home in the semi-arid climate of the West for now.

This black and white photo of a historic firehouse was taken in Georgetown, Colorado. The old white clapboard, straight lines of the front facade, and bell tower caught my eye as a storm was brewing. In fact, we had to dash for cover shortly after I shot this photograph because of lightning. We were about a block away from our car and I heard the car alarm go off right after a close strike. Our car's security system has not been the same since! It tends to go off at the most awkward times. I hope you enjoy my new photo, Alpine Hose.

Black and White Architectural Arches Photography

Architecture has always fascinated me as a subject. I often see patterns when I am taking pictures and the crisp geometric lines of a building pop out at me. Shadows and light are sharper too and translate well to a black and white photograph. In this photo I like the chaotic element of the tree branches protruding into the frame for visual interest. I hope you like it.

Funny Black & White Days Photos - Rare Photo Collection...

Redstone Canyon Colorado

The hum of the tires turned into a grumbly growl when I turned the truck onto the dirt road. I felt my shoulders immediately relax as I looked at the familiar old cottonwood standing guard at the valley entrance. As I bumped down the twisty and narrow way home, I could easily imagine the day when it was still a rutted trail. Though not much more now it was still passable all winter. I slowed the truck to a stop at the cattle guard and jumped out to unlock the gate. Looking up into the foothills I could see the snow laden fog cresting the mountain top. Just a couple more miles and I would be next to a warm and cozy fire with a cup of steaming coffee. Life is good in Redstone.
